2258Tristan says in his audio clip that: This was said to me by a guy called Ray Durgnat, when I was at the University of East London, the bargain bucket of British education, back in 1991.
We didnt know it, but this guy was really cool. He knew Jean Luc Godard in Paris in 1968 during the aborted revolution. And this was something Jean Luc Godard said to him.
I guess the reason the phrase sticks in my head is because its one of the contradictions you often get in creative work. A lot of the time, in order to create something that appears very free and chaotic, you have to exercise a huge amount of control. Thats something I bring to my own work, even today.
